Get ready to compete in the first edition of the Antigua Wingfoil Championship, organized in collaboration between the Caribbean Foiling Championship (CFC) and Antigua Sailing Week (ASW). The event will take place from May 1-3, 2023 in the stunning waters of Antigua. Steady trade winds, and sunny weather will provide the perfect conditions for an adrenaline-fueled experience. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to register now and receive a discounted entry fee of $200 before March 31st.
The championship will feature three days of racing, including two days of fast-paced slalom-style course racing and one day dedicated to the long-distance downwinder race, usually held on the final day. As the event is officially part of Antigua Sailing Week, the downwinder that starts in Falmouth Harbour and finishes on Turners Beach, coincides with ASW Lay Day. This offers an opportunity for sailors who bring their wingfoil gear to join the event.
According to Maxim van den Pol, organizer of the event, “Wingfoiling is developing rapidly, and we noticed that many Wingfoilers are also sailors and vice versa. By hosting the downwinder on Lay Day, sailors who want to join in on the fun can now do so!”
The organization has chosen Pigeon Point Beach as the event location location. This means that this is the daily meeting point and also the location for the morning briefings. Whilst still close to the Antigua Yacht Club the beach offers ample space for set up and good overview of the courses inside Falmouth Harbour.
The downwinder is the most anticipated race, covering an 8 nautical mile stretch along the south side of Antigua, starting in Falmouth Harbour and ending at Turners Beach. After the race, competitors will be transported back to Pigeon Point Beach for the prize-giving ceremony.
To ensure everyone’s safety, sailors who want to participate in the long-distance race need to provide proof of their capabilities. This is either based on skills shown in the first two race days or by submitting a video to the organization prior to the event. More information on the requirements can be found on the event website.
Details about the courses, qualification rules, and safety protocol will be shared in the upcoming weeks.
